About
Indivisible Princeton gathers each month on the First Friday at Four here in Princeton, NJ to stand up and defend communities of compassion, peace, democracy, and the rule of law. These smaller visibility events are a great opportunity to meet and build community with fellow Indivisible Princeton members and organizers. Join us! On Friday, June 5, at 4:00 p.m., we will gather for a peaceful sidewalk vigil along Stockton St., near Bayard Ln. in front of Monument Park. Stockton St. is the same street as the Governor’s residence. Our message is simple: Governor Sherrill must use every available state power to protect detainees, protect their families, protect protesters, and move New Jersey toward the closure of Delaney Hall. Our vigil will call on Governor Sherrill to act with courage and urgency. Please bring LARGE signs that will be seen by cars passing by. These signs should be directed to Governor Sherrill and the Trump regime, as well as signs supporting Delaney Hall detainees, their families, and the protesters who have been standing with them. This will also be a singing vigil. Together, we will learn and sing songs from the Singing Resistance Songbook and the migrant justice movement. We will sing “It’s OK to Change Your Mind,” written by community song-leader Annie Schlaefer. The song was created in response to escalating ICE raids and authoritarian violence in the Twin Cities and is inspired by Otpor!, the Serbian civil resistance movement that helped overthrow Slobodan Milošević in 2000. Otpor! members were repeatedly arrested and beaten by police. Afterward, they would return to police stations and officers’ homes chanting, “You may not join us today, but you can join us tomorrow.” In the final hours of that movement, when Milošević ordered police and military forces to fire on massive crowds of protesters, they refused. Bring signs directed to our Governor: "Sherrill, It's Okay to Change Your Mind." "Show Us Your Courage." We will also learn “Juntos Hacemos la Liberación,” a grounding song developed in collaboration with migrant justice organizers, with the message: “No están solos, no están solas” — you are not alone. And we will sing “This Is for Our Neighbors” by Lu Aya of the Peace Poets: “This is for our people who are locked inside, together, we will, Abolish ICE.” You do not need to be a singer to participate. The point is to show up together, to hold space together, and to make clear that people inside Delaney Hall and the families waiting outside are not alone. This is a peaceful sidewalk vigil. We will gather with compassion and resolve. We will direct our message to Governor Sherrill because New Jersey has a choice: respond to this crisis with force and fear, or respond with protection, accountability, legal support, and humanity.
