About
This is a visibility event to call for justice and an independent investigation for the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, Sr., who was shot and killed by ICE officers. Being undocumented is not a death sentence. ICE, DHS, and the FBI have proven they cannot be trusted with their own investigations. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was a dedicated father and husband who had a career in construction to support his wife and his 3 American-born children. He was actively working through the legal process to obtain his work permit, attending hearings and trying to do things the right way. His family says he knew proper procedures if he knew he was being stopped by ICE. On Tuesday, July 7, 2026, Lorenzo was picking up his crew for work to build homes in North Houston. Around 6:50 am at the intersection of Canal St. and Wayside in Houston, Lorenzo was shot by ICE officers. He died while being transported to Ben Taub Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His family was not notified by officials from ICE, law enforcement, or the hospital. They found out via social media posts. ICE officials claim Lorenzo attempted to evade arrest and weaponized his vehicle, claiming he rammed their vehicle. They have not provided evidence of these claims. They detained 3 other individuals while Lorenzo lay moaning on the ground. Lorenzo's family, FIEL Houston, LULAC, and The Texas Civil Rights Project are calling for an independent investigation. Federal officials have not released video or images of the shooting or the vehicles to back up their claims. This marks at least the 8th death as a result of ICE sweeps or enforcement during the Trump administration, in addition to over 52 deaths in ICE custody during 2025 and 2026. _Details obtained from AP News, public family statements, The Guardian, and Houston Public Media._ _A core principle behind all our events is a commitment to nonviolent action.
