About
Please join the Democracy Defenders subcommittee of the Manassas & Manassas Park Cities Democratic Committee for a Saturday morning visibility protest and community gathering outside the City of Manassas Community Center. The fight to protect voting rights never ends, and right now, we’re witnessing a Jim-Crow-era effort from politicians and their billionaire friends to restrict our freedoms, silence our voices, and consolidate power. But in America, we choose our leaders. We will decide our future. The same spirit that fueled Selma, Montgomery, and the March on Washington lives on in our unified action. Six years after the passing of Congressman Lewis, we're organizing an event in our community to carry the torch, continue the legacy of John Lewis, and pass it forward to future generations. Join us! We will stand with protest signs on the sidewalks on both sides of Sudley Road outside the Manassas Community Center, between Digges Rd and roughly Stonewall Road or Forestwood Lane. Our event marshals, wearing orange vests, will indicate the limits of the permitted sidewalks. For your safety, please stand back from the roadway at all times, and do not stand in any crosswalk or driveway. Ample free parking will be available in the surface parking lots surrounding the Community Center building, in various surface parking lots at nearby commercial and institutional buildings, and along adjoining residential streets. As a courtesy to the businesses and their customers, please DO NOT PARK at the Wawa or the Canterbury Village Shopping Center. Carpooling and arriving early are wise. ### WARNING: To avoid getting towed or booted, DO NOT PARK in ANY parking lot or area with signs posted that prohibit unauthorized parking. Public restrooms, food, and beverages will be available inside the adjacent Wawa convenience store. The restrooms and water fountains inside the Community Center may also be available after 10 am. Our event headquarters will be beneath a blue popup canopy tent on the lawn outside the Community Center, opposite Plantation Lane. Visit our headquarters to learn about various local political activities and to create or pick up a handmade protest sign if you need one. A local band, Circle of Toads, will entertain the crowd with protest songs. If you have one, please bring a small handheld American flag and a protest sign that speaks to your issue(s). Patriotic attire and costumes are welcome, but optional. In addition, bring a water bottle, dress for the weather, wear sunscreen, and bring a chair if you’d like. Reach out if you have any questions, and please spread the word! ### IMPORTANT: We have received a public gathering permit from the City of Manassas to conduct this event. Participants must obey all pedestrian and traffic laws and may not interfere with the movements of vehicles or pedestrians. Hand-held protest signs, flags, and banners must be no larger than 24”x36”, and their supports must be no larger than 1”x1”x36” and lack sharp ends. Our event marshals, wearing orange vests, will act to de-escalate any potential incidents of harassment, vandalism, or violence. If you see something, say something. If the City requires us to modify our plans, we will notify event registrants in advance via email. Good Trouble Lives On is a non-partisan weekend of action. We require that participants commit to not advocate for, endorse, or oppose any political candidate or ballot initiative. *A core principle behind all Good Trouble Lives On events is a commitment to nonviolent action and no civil disobedience. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events.*
