About
Northwest CT Take Action will host "Human Rights Have No Borders," a peaceful community protest on Friday, July 25, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Coe Park in Torrington. The demonstration is being organized in response to the recent fatal ICE shootings of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Texas and Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Maine. Organizers say the event is intended to honor their lives while calling attention to the human impact of immigration enforcement and reaffirming the importance of human rights, due process, and the dignity of every person. "People across the country are grieving and asking difficult questions," organizers said. "Many feel overwhelmed by the constant stream of troubling news and wonder whether their voices still matter. This gathering is an opportunity to stand together, support one another, and demonstrate that our community believes human rights do not end at a border." The event will feature community members gathering peacefully in solidarity with immigrant families and all who believe that every human life deserves dignity, respect, and equal protection under the law. In addition to the protest, the Torrington Democratic Town Committee will host a voter registration drive throughout the event. Organizers encourage all eligible residents to register to vote or verify that their voter registration is current. With the upcoming midterm elections approaching, organizers say civic participation is more important than ever and emphasize that voting remains one of the most powerful ways for people to make their voices heard. Northwest CT Take Action encourages people from all backgrounds to attend. Participants are invited to bring signs expressing messages of human rights, compassion, justice, and solidarity. The protest is intended to remain peaceful, respectful, and welcoming to all.
