Make Then Known Vigil

Saturday, August 1, 2026, 6:00 PM CDT
Memphis, Tennessee

About

Since 2018, 68 people have died in the custody of the Shelby County Jail due to a combination of staff abuse and neglect, and negligence by the healthcare provider. The lives of these people mattered, their families were left without answers, and their names too often go unspoken. They were human beings. Please join Just City, MICAH, Memphis For All and the Justice and Safety Alliance for Make Them Known: Remembering The Lives Lost At the Shelby County Jail. On Saturday, August 1 at 6:30 PM we will gather at Memphis First United Methodist Church in downtown Memphis, to say their names. Next, we will hold space for family testimonies, and light candles. Then the Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church Sanctuary Choir will honor those lives in song. At 8:00 PM, we will walk in silence to the jail entrance for a moment of silence and then lay roses in remembrance. This vigil also comes at a crucial time, just five days before the General Election for Shelby County Sheriff. The moment demands that we say their names loudly and publicly. Water and light snacks will be provided outside the sanctuary. You can RSVP at this link. RSVPing simply helps us know how many people to expect. Make Them Known Saturday, August 1st, 2026 6:30 PM (silent walk to jail entrance at 8:00 PM) Memphis First United Methodist Church Make Them Known. Make it stop.
