While our overall theme is Defending Democracy, each week we pick a specific focus. On Saturday, August 8th, 11am - 12:00pm (60 mins), we will focus on creating another Human Chain of banners (and more!) in a straight line down the sidewalks of Greenwood Ave. If you missed our Human Chain 2, check out the Press Release and the great op-ed in the CT Mirror written by rally favorite, Jonathan Phillips. We welcome local organizations to join us with their banners and members to once again demonstrate the unity in our communities and solidarity in our fight against fascism. Victoria (Tori) Calamito We are so excited to have Victoria (Tori) Calamito with us this week in Bethel, right before she runs to join her regular rally group in New Milford. Lots of rallying for Tori this Saturday: both in one day! Tori will speak about her immigrant grandparents and how it feels watching ICE throw innocent people like them into prison camps. Tori is a long time member of ActLocal NWCT and a regular New Milford rally participant. She is a passionate activist seeking to do all she can to protect her community and speak out for those who don’t have the privilege of speaking safely at this time. Tori is also a TikTok star who is a die-hard Wizard of Oz fan and historian. On her theozvlog TikTok account, she has accumulated over 320,000 followers who can see some of her Oz Con appearances, videos about the movie, and content about Wicked as well. To create the longest visible Human Chain possible we will be using: Banners, including our NEWEST hand-painted banner with an important immigration message: Immigrants are Welcome Here! Thanks Cindy Nejame for creating this banner and working with some ralliers to make it a community project (Alyson, Gypsy Gene, Kathy and Kate). But this week, the bamboo poles that my husband attached will make it easier to hold. Thanks for the bamboo Julia Provey! Christened by our friends from Ridgefield Resistance. Thank you to artist Julia Provey, (Learn about her here: https://share.google/kj7BSApJELjvgkSkw ) for creating our other beautiful immigration statement piece and leading volunteers in the painting. Thanks Tony Heslin for letting us turn the upstairs at Shakedown Street Eats into an art studio for both new immigration-themed banners. We were also gifted this No Kings banner to keep: As well as this Release Epstein Files banner: Our Join Us banner created by Cindy Nejame will be with us every week: As well as our We The People Defend Democracy banner: Thank you Kathy McKenna for giving us this great new Defend the Constitution banner. And many more!! With all the banners and signage that we expect, we may need many of you to help us hold these banners and signs. Individual signs are of course always welcome too, and we will also have our usual stash of individual signs for you to borrow. *********** So How Will This Work? As soon as you arrive on Saturday we will start lining you up. You can check out the button and snack table first, if you’d like, and then line up. Then Tori will join us from the great ActLocal NWCT group. We will have peacekeepers (wearing yellow safety vests) assigned to sections of our chain to help keep everyone safe: We can use the sidewalks but not block the sidewalks. We must not stand in the street (and this includes taking pictures) We need to be mindful of driveways, parking lot entrances and cross streets. And as always, we do not engage with agitators. You are welcome to bring a camping chair to sit in your space on the line. ************************ See the full Bethel rally announcement with pictures here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/16mr3WuAvw9ccLq-FxbHgcMiZ8VU9nrzOh-Olg5_g3e0/edit?usp=drivesdk Please don’t attend the rally if you cannot refrain from engaging with agitators. ************ Never miss information about upcoming rallies by registering for our rally newsletter, bit.ly/BethelRalliesNewsletter (case sensitive).
