On August 15, 2026, the Trump-appointed Office of the Comptroller of the Currency gave preliminary approval for a federal bank charter to a trust bank controlled by World Liberty Financial (WLF) — the crypto venture launched by Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, and partners, roughly 38% owned by an entity tied to the President and his family. Sen. Elizabeth Warren called it “the most brazen act of self-dealing our financial system has ever seen.” Americans for Financial Reform Education Fund says the OCC exceeded its legal authority and warns the charter blurs the wall between banking and commerce, risking public bailouts of a crypto bank the regulator cannot impartially supervise — because the President's own family controls it. The charter lets WLF directly issue its USD1 stablecoin — already over $4 billion in circulation — cutting out independent oversight. Trump personally collected roughly $527 million from WLF token sales last year, and the new bank's board will be chaired by the son of Trump's Middle East envoy. Meanwhile, crypto lobbyists are pushing Congress to fast-track the CLARITY Act — legislation that would hand the industry a light-touch regulatory framework while conflicts like this one go unaddressed.
