About

Friday, August 28 at 5:30 PM Washington Square Park—under the Arch Join us at 5:30 for a protest action at Washington Square Park! At 6:30, we will march to the occupation at OpenAI’s headquarters, 295 Lafayette Street. We are calling for a pause on AI research and demanding that OpenAI support an international treaty to stop the dangerous race toward increasingly powerful and uncontrollable AI systems. Artificial intelligence is already transforming our society—but workers and communities are being forced to bear the consequences while Big Tech collects the profits. AI is eliminating jobs, replacing skilled positions with lower-paid and less secure work, weakening unions, and allowing employers to monitor workers’ every movement. AI-powered surveillance can be used to track people, intensify workloads, and push workers to unsafe speeds. These systems are also expanding the power of police, prisons, and immigration enforcement. Facial-recognition technology has already contributed to multiple wrongful arrests. In one case, Porcha Woodruff was arrested for a carjacking while eight months pregnant after facial-recognition software falsely identified her. She spent hours in jail before the charges were eventually dropped. This technology is now being used to help build the machinery of mass deportation. ICE uses systems that can combine information from driver’s-license records, facial recognition, license-plate readers, social media, travel records, location data, government databases, and information purchased from private companies. Palantir has received a $30 million ICE contract to develop “ImmigrationOS,” a platform designed to support the identification, tracking, and deportation of immigrants. AI does not merely observe state violence—it can help automate and expand it. AI also carries an enormous environmental cost. The data centers powering it consume massive amounts of electricity and water, intensify the climate crisis, and leave surrounding communities facing pollution, constant noise, strained water supplies, and rising utility rates. At the same time, AI-generated misinformation is making it harder to separate fact from fiction. Overreliance on these systems threatens education, creativity, critical thinking, and the foundational human abilities we need to understand and challenge the world around us. And these are only the dangers already unfolding. Researchers and technology leaders have warned that increasingly powerful AI could cause catastrophic harm—including risks to humanity’s survival. Yet Big Tech is racing ahead without meaningful regulation, democratic oversight, or public consent. The decisions shaping the future of work, education, immigration, policing, democracy, the environment, and human life cannot be left to a handful of corporations. Join us and make your voice heard. Unions, environmental organizations, educators, students, immigrant-rights groups, civil-liberties organizations, worker associations, and other community groups interested in partnering or helping with turnout are encouraged to contact the event coordinator. We welcome coalition partners. Meet under the Washington Square Park Arch at 5:30 PM on Friday, August 28.
