About

We come together as a community to honor the life of Pierre Damas Bel — a 20-year-old Haitian student, honors graduate, and Wright State University freshman who dreamed of becoming a doctor. Pierre was known for his tenacity and heart. A JROTC standout in high school, he came to the U.S. chasing a better future and had just begun his college journey studying physiology and neuroscience. In his final weeks, he was forced to wear an ICE-issued GPS ankle monitor after Haitians lost Temporary Protected Status — a device his family says brought him shame, humiliation, and bullying that he could not carry alone. In his own words, posted just weeks before his death: “I didn’t come here to commit a crime or hurt anyone. Yet now I’m walking through the streets of the United States with a GPS monitor on my leg, carrying a feeling of shame and humiliation that I never imagined I would experience.” Pierre’s death is a call to our community — to grieve together, to speak his name, and to demand accountability for policies that strip people of their dignity. We gather not just to mourn, but to affirm that Pierre was a human being with hopes and dreams, and that his story matters. Please join us with candles as we hold space for his family, his memory, and the broader Haitian community carrying this same pain. Bring a candle. Bring your voice. Bring each other. note: Parking: the lot next to the jail, or street parking on Wood Street. Please NOT the jail's own lot FB Event link: https://www.facebook.com/share/1D2A59nxgn/
