Rally to Demand that the Rensselaer County Sheriff Stop Working with ICE

About

Join us on Monday, Sept. 21st at 5:30pm outside the Rensselaer County Sheriff's office to show our opposition to the fact they continue working with ICE to arrest, detain, and deport countless local immigrants, despite a new state law that prohibits such activity. Hear from powerful speakers and demonstrate peacefully. Come with signs, and bullhorns. We're also raising money for the Capital Region Sancutary Coalition (CRSC) before and during this rally. The CRSC does meaningful work to support local immigrants. MORE INFO ABOUT WHAT THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE IS DOING: Rensselaer County Sheriff Kyle Bourgault and County Executive Steve McLaughlin oppose New York’s new law requiring local governments to end 287(g) agreements with ICE, which allow trained local jail officers to perform certain federal immigration-enforcement functions. The county executive and the sheriff argue that the state is interfering with the authority of elected sheriffs and preventing them from voluntarily cooperating with the federal government on public safety. We argue that immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility and that the state should prohibit its local police, jails, and resources from being used for federal civil immigration enforcement. This a local Indivisible event! *A core principle behind all Indivisible events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.*
