ICE Out For Good, a Vigil for Pierre Damas Bel

Municipal Green, Teaneck, New Jersey
About
Twenty-year-old Pierre Damas Bel arrived in the U.S. from Haiti in 2024. He graduated from his high school in Springfield, Ohio, this year with honors. He was a talented soccer player, active in ROTC and he had recently started college at Wright State University. But on Sept 2nd, Bel died, a death that his family believes was a suicide motivated by the loss of temporary protected status or TPS for so many Haitian immigrants earlier this summer. Several weeks ago, Bel had shared on Instagram that ICE had placed a GPS monitor on his ankle. He wrote that he was, quote, "carrying a feeling of shame and humiliation that I never imagined I would experience." (From NPR) We know from Minneapolis - ICE actions have a broad pattern of unchecked violence, impunity, and abuse carried out by federal immigration enforcement agencies against members of our communities. We hold a vigil on October 2nd, one month since Pierre left us, to demand accountability, honor him, and make visible the human cost of ICE’s actions. A core principle behind all ICE Out For Good events is a commitment to nonviolent action and no civil disobedience. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values, and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events. All events should be held in public spaces or on public property.
