About
A Venezuelan man was shot by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Austin, Texas. Despite a bullet remaining lodged in his back, Perez was released into ICE custody and transported to the Pearsall Detention Center, about 100 miles from Austin after being shot, His attorney said 28-year-old Wilber Rafael Garces Perez was later taken from the Pearsall Detention Center to another hospital and has lost movement on the left side of his body. She said her client had not received adequate medical treatment while in detention and was in significant pain. Perez was shot on Sunday while making a DoorDash delivery in Austin, Texas. His lawyer said ICE agents sideswiped his vehicle before an agent opened fire. The Austin incident follows other shootings involving immigration agents. In July, an ICE officer fatally shot 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston after federal agents pursued him in unmarked vehicles. Another ICE officer shot 25-year-old Colombian man Johan Sebastián in Maine in July. The administration's immigration crackdown has also faced widespread criticism following the deaths of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Minnesota.
