Happening now / Sources
Where our news comes from
Everything the Happening now page reads, and the rules for what counts. The same rules apply to every outlet, whatever its politics, and to every cause. How we check news
What we read
- The GDELT Project: an open index of the world's news. Every 15 minutes we read the US protest events it found, and the articles it tagged as protest coverage. GDELT is only a lead: each article's own headline has to describe a protest, and its own place wins over GDELT's guess.
- 18 national newsrooms and 198 local newsrooms, through the public feeds they publish (listed below). Local newsrooms are the best source on local protests.
From each report we keep only the headline as the outlet wrote it, the outlet's name, the time and a link. We never copy article text or photos. Social media posts are never a source for a news item.
What counts as independent
An item is confirmed when two independent outlets report it. These don't count as a second outlet, though they're still listed:
- Wire stories reprinted by other outlets: a story credited to AP, Reuters, AFP, UPI, Bloomberg, CNN, States Newsroom, Nexstar Media Wire, The National Desk, Gray News, Stacker, or whose page says it's another site's story, counts once, as the original's. Fifty papers running one AP story are one source.
- Outlets with the same owner share stories, so together they count once: ABC (Disney), NBC (Comcast), FOX Television Stations, Tegna, Nexstar, Hearst Television, Advance Local, States Newsroom, MediaNews Group.
- Copies: the same headline word for word on another site counts once.
- Aggregators that republish others' stories: allsides.com, aol.com, apple.news, archive.org, biztoc.com, devdiscourse.com, drudgereport.com, feedly.com, flipboard.com, google.com, ground.news, headtopics.com, ifttt.com, inkl.com, latestly.com, memeorandum.com, msn.com, muckrack.com, news.google.com, news.yahoo.com, newsbeezer.com, newsbreak.com, newsbreakapp.com, newser.com, newsnow.co.uk, newsr.in, realclearpolitics.com, smartnews.com, theweek.com, yahoo.com.
- Press releases: accesswire.com, businesswire.com, einpresswire.com, globenewswire.com, issuewire.com, newsfilecorp.com, newswire.com, openpr.com, prlog.org, prnewswire.com, prweb.com, and sponsored pages.
- Opinion: opinion pages, editorials, columns and letters.
- Social media, self-publishing and event pages: actionnetwork.org, allevents.in, blogspot.com, bsky.app, change.org, eventbrite.com, facebook.com, gab.com, instagram.com, linkedin.com, medium.com, meetup.com, mobilize.us, patreon.com, reddit.com, rumble.com, substack.com, t.me, telegram.org, threads.net, tiktok.com, truthsocial.com, tumblr.com, twitter.com, wordpress.com, x.com, youtu.be, youtube.com.
Outlets with a rule
None. Moderators can block an outlet (for fabricated stories or spam) or stop counting it as independent, never for its politics; any such rule will be listed here with its reason.

Labels
Each item gets one label: the most serious thing the reports describe. Labels state what outlets reported, not our judgment; who did what to whom is in each outlet's own headline.

- Injuries reported
- Outlets report someone hurt at or near the protest, including people struck by a vehicle.

- Outlets report the crowd was ordered or forced to leave, for example with tear gas or pepper spray.
- Arrests reported
